Baby Hair Care; Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It is also a nourishing natural oil that serves as a wonderful moisturizer for baby hair and skin.

There are different types of coconut oil. Pure coconut oil, derived from the flesh of the coconut, is perfect for cooking because of its nutty taste and amber hue. But these same qualities, I feel, make it less suitable for use with your baby. I prefer to use virgin coconut oil with my little one because there is hardly any odor or colour to it (as it is not heated during the process of extraction). It is also derived from the milk of fresh coconuts.

Newborn hair may be soft and silky, but oftentimes (especially with the use of baby bath and shampoo) can develop into dry and fizzy hair. Using baby oils with artificial ingredients and chemicals can make this worse. Coconut oil will help maintain healthy hair through rich, fatty acids that nourish and moisturize the scalp and hair.

I apply virgin coconut oil on Ahalya’s hair after a bath and also use a few drops in warm water for her sponge bath at night.
