First Day of Solids!

Ahalya will be 6 months old in 6 days and today is our first day of solids. She’s been exclusively breastfed (on demand) up until now and I was scared to introduce her to anything else fearing she might reject it or be fussy. The midwife suggested that I start her weaning journey with 2 tablespoons of cooked red rice mashed together with some breast milk as her first meal. I used the Golden Crop Red Basmati and mashed it into a lumpy texture (but still in runny form) for feeding. This too was suggested by the midwife who asked me not to purée the food but serve it this way. I don’t know if it was the texture, beginners luck or the familiarity of taste of the breast milk in food, but after the first few confused mouthfuls that were pushed out, she gobbled it up (slowly, in very small mouthfuls and with lots of board books entertaining her). She ate about 2-2.5 tablespoons of rice and I’m so glad that she didn’t gag or choke because of the lumpiness. I’m hoping -nay praying- that she will continue to eat this way. Fingers crossed!
